Could Your Closet Hurt Your Health?

IN WOMEN'S HEALTH

While being fashionable can help you look and feel your best, some of your wardrobe staples and current trends could be hazardous to your health. Consider the consequences of wearing these items too often:

  • Earrings can cause more damage than you might think. Left in too long, you could get a bacterial infection. If earrings are particularly heavy, they could stretch your earlobes. Change earrings often and scrub your ears to reduce infection.
  • High heels push the weight of the person's body to be unevenly distributed on their toes. Wearing high heels too often could lead to ankle sprains, bunions, and stress fractures. If you choose to wear heels for a board meeting or a night on the town, keep a pair of flats to slip on afterward to give your feet a rest.
  • Skinny jeans can lead to health problems such as nerve compression, digestive issues, and numbness at the waistline. The same goes for belts that are cinched too tightly. Consider wearing tight jeans for only a short period of time to reduce any damage.
  • Big bags or oversized pursesmight be all the rage, but the weight of the bags and the way women carry them over one shoulder or arm can cause muscle imbalance, leading to back, hip, and knee pain. Opt for a smaller bag, and don't pack unnecessary items in a bag you carry all day.

Bring the Spa Home

While some woman take shopping trips to deal with the stresses of life, de-stress at home for less. Pamper yourself by:

  • Dimming the lights when you take a shower or bubble bath. Light a scented candle or tea lights for a relaxing night in.
  • Exploring your senses. Have some leftover citrus fruit? Cut it up and put it in a pot filled with water and add a couple of cinnamon sticks. Once the water boils, your house will smell warm and inviting.
  • Mixing up a mask or scrub. Many spa treatments can be easily replicated at home with ingredients from your kitchen, such as olive oil, honey, sugar, salt, oatmeal or avocado. Mix and match ingredients based on your skin and hair type.
  • Sipping something sparkly like mineral water or club soda. Add a splash
